Morocco strengthens its global role in road safety through national strategy

Morocco is strengthening its position as a leading regional and international actor in road safety, with its approach increasingly focused on reducing traffic fatalities and promoting safer mobility. The country’s efforts are being supported by a long-term national strategy that places the protection of human life at the center of public policy.

Speaking at a high-level United Nations General Assembly meeting in New York dedicated to road safety and the acceleration of progress toward the Sustainable Development Goals, Morocco’s Minister of Transport and Logistics highlighted the country’s commitment to improving road safety through an integrated and forward-looking approach.

Morocco has developed a national road safety strategy extending to 2030, in line with global road safety objectives. The framework focuses on several key areas, including effective governance, law enforcement, infrastructure development, public education and training, as well as the use of modern technologies, artificial intelligence and innovation.

The country’s international engagement in this field was further strengthened by its hosting of the Fourth Global Ministerial Conference on Road Safety in Marrakech in February 2025. The event brought together international stakeholders and resulted in the adoption of the Marrakech Declaration, which serves as a roadmap for accelerating the implementation of global commitments aimed at reducing road deaths and injuries.

The Marrakech conference also saw the launch of the Mohammed VI International Road Safety Award. The initiative aims to encourage innovation, recognize successful practices and promote international cooperation in efforts to improve road safety and save lives.

The latest high-level UN meeting concluded with the adoption of a declaration on progress in strengthening road safety. The document incorporated proposals put forward by Morocco, including references to the Marrakech Declaration and the global ministerial conference held in the Moroccan city.

The declaration also highlighted the initiative to establish the Mohammed VI International Road Safety Award, reflecting growing international recognition of Morocco’s contribution to global road safety efforts.

Morocco’s participation in international road safety initiatives demonstrates its ambition to play a more active role in shaping global policies on safer transportation. The country’s strategy combines regulatory measures with infrastructure improvements, education and technological innovation in an effort to address the complex causes of road accidents.

The high-level meeting was organized under the theme of accelerating action to achieve the international objective of cutting road deaths and injuries by half by 2030. The initiative reflects the growing urgency of strengthening road safety policies worldwide, as traffic accidents remain a major public health and development challenge.

Through its national strategy and international initiatives, Morocco is seeking to consolidate its role as a reliable partner in global road safety cooperation while contributing to broader efforts to protect lives and promote safer transport systems.
