Two tourists injured in knife attack near Athens Acropolis, suspect arrested

Two tourists were injured in a knife attack near the entrance to the Acropolis in Athens on Tuesday morning, prompting a rapid police response at one of Greece's most visited historic landmarks.

According to Greek authorities, the victims were an American couple of Greek origin who were attacked shortly after 8:00 a.m. local time near the entrance to the archaeological site.

The woman suffered a minor injury to her hand, while the man sustained a more serious wound to his leg. Both victims were transported to hospital for treatment.

Police officers on motorcycles arrived at the scene within minutes. Emergency responders reportedly applied a tourniquet to the man's injured leg to control the bleeding before the suspect was restrained and taken into custody.

Authorities have not yet released the identity of the attacker or confirmed a motive. Local media reports have suggested that the suspect may have been suffering from mental health issues, but investigators have not officially verified those claims.

The attack occurred outside one of Greece's most iconic tourist attractions, which attracts millions of visitors each year. Despite the incident, authorities moved quickly to secure the area and begin an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the assault.

Police are continuing to examine the suspect's background and determine whether the attack was random or targeted.

The incident is expected to renew discussions about public safety around major tourist destinations, particularly during the peak summer travel season when visitor numbers are at their highest.
