Japan: 14 injured in knife and liquid attack at factory
Fourteen people were injured on Friday following a knife attack at a factory in central Japan, during which an unidentified liquid was also sprayed, according to emergency services.
A call was received around 4:30 p.m. local time from a rubber manufacturing plant in the city of Mishima, located in Shizuoka Prefecture, reporting that several individuals had been stabbed and that a spray-like liquid had been used during the incident. Emergency officials confirmed that all victims were conscious at the time of assistance.
At least six of the injured were taken to hospital for further treatment, while a large emergency response was deployed, including multiple ambulances and rescue vehicles. The severity of the injuries has not yet been officially disclosed.
Japanese media reported that a man suspected of attempted murder was arrested shortly after the incident. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the circumstances and motive behind the attack.
The incident occurred at a factory operated by Yokohama Rubber Co., a company specializing in the production of tires for trucks and buses.
Violent crime remains relatively rare in Japan, which has strict gun control laws and a low homicide rate. However, isolated attacks involving knives or other weapons do occur from time to time, drawing widespread public attention.
