European central bank prepares rate hike in three years amid inflation rise
The European Central Bank is preparing to raise interest rates for the first time in nearly three years as inflationary pressures intensify across the eurozone. The move comes as policymakers respond to weakening growth and persistent price increases linked to energy market disruptions.
The eurozone economy contracted by 0.2 percent in the first quarter of 2026, signaling a fragile economic backdrop. Forecasts for the year have been repeatedly downgraded as the region absorbs the impact of prolonged energy market instability following disruptions to key global shipping routes. Growth expectations now point to a subdued expansion path well below earlier projections made last year.
Inflation has remained above the European Central Bank’s 2 percent target for three consecutive months, reaching 3.2 percent in May. Energy prices have been a key driver, with energy inflation climbing to 10.9 percent in April, the highest level recorded in more than a year. Policymakers are now expected to approve a 25 basis point rate increase at their June 10 and 11 meeting, marking the first tightening cycle move in almost three years.
The inflation surge has been reinforced by a structural energy supply shock, as tighter global fuel markets push up costs across Europe. Reduced gas storage levels, which have fallen below 30 percent in recent months, have heightened concerns about supply resilience heading into the next demand cycle. Economists warn that the shift from pipeline dependence to global liquefied gas markets has left the region exposed to external disruptions.
Central banks and international institutions have urged a cautious policy response, balancing inflation control with fragile growth conditions. While some forecasts expect a gradual normalization of energy prices, the broader outlook remains uncertain as policymakers navigate slower growth, elevated inflation, and persistent supply vulnerabilities.
