Urea prices erase war premium as markets retreat
Urea prices have fallen sharply, erasing gains driven by geopolitical tensions linked to the Iran conflict. The correction marks a full reversal of the surge that followed fears of supply disruptions in global fertilizer markets earlier this year.
Prices of nitrogen fertilizers in the United States have dropped below levels recorded before the escalation of hostilities involving Iran at the end of February. Market data show urea declining by more than 30 percent over the past month, reaching around 377.50 dollars per metric ton as of June 8. Broader agricultural benchmarks have also weakened, with spot indices falling to their lowest level since early March.
The earlier spike was triggered by fears that military strikes involving the United States and Israel could disrupt shipping routes through the Strait of Hormuz. The waterway handles a significant share of global fertilizer trade, including a large portion of urea exports. At the peak of uncertainty in mid-April, urea prices had surged more than 47 percent, while other nitrogen-based inputs such as anhydrous ammonia also recorded strong gains.
As geopolitical pressure eased and a ceasefire reduced risks to maritime flows, supply expectations stabilized. Fertilizer markets began to unwind the war-driven premium, pulling prices back toward pre-conflict levels. Grain markets followed the same trajectory. Corn, soybeans and wheat contracts for upcoming harvests all declined from their May highs, with wheat futures in Chicago posting double-digit losses. Analysts also noted that short-term spikes in input costs failed to fully translate into consumer food inflation.
The speed of the reversal has reshaped expectations for the agricultural outlook. Earlier forecasts had projected sustained increases in fertilizer prices through 2026, but current trends suggest those projections have been overtaken by market conditions. While farmers who locked in high input costs during the spring face tighter margins, lower fertilizer prices now offer relief for upcoming planting cycles and long-term planning into 2027.
