Morocco expands direct social aid to 3.4 million students
Direct social assistance in Morocco reached nearly 3.4 million students during the 2025-2026 school year, up from 2.7 million the previous year. The announcement was made during a parliamentary session focused on general policy questions. The figures point to a sharp expansion of state-backed support targeting pupils across the education system.
Officials reported that 1.9 million beneficiaries live in rural areas. The distribution highlights a policy focus on reducing territorial disparities in access to education. The program is presented as part of a broader effort to strengthen equal opportunities between urban and rural students.
Authorities have merged several support schemes into a single direct assistance system. The aim is to improve efficiency in public spending and strengthen the impact of social transfers on schooling outcomes. The approach is framed as part of a wider state social model designed to reduce social and economic gaps affecting education.
The government also linked the expansion of aid to efforts to reduce school dropout rates. Family allowances have been integrated into the direct assistance framework to help keep children in school. Boarding facilities increased from 126,000 beneficiaries in 2022 to nearly 200,000 currently, including 163,000 students in rural areas. School meals now reach 75,000 pupils, with 69,000 in rural zones. School transport services cover more than 700,000 students nationwide, including 600,000 in rural areas.
