Taiwan accuses Chinese coast guard of harassing commercial vessels near its waters
Taiwan has accused Chinese coast guard vessels of interfering with commercial maritime traffic near its waters, raising fresh concerns over security and freedom of navigation in the region. According to Taiwanese authorities, several Chinese coast guard ships operating east of the island recently contacted passing commercial vessels and requested information regarding their ports of origin and intended destinations.
Taiwan's coast guard stated that these actions took place over recent days and described them as attempts to assert jurisdiction in waters where Taipei maintains that Beijing has no legal authority. Taiwanese patrol vessels reportedly responded by informing the Chinese ships that they were operating in waters under Taiwan’s administration and urged them not to disrupt civilian maritime traffic.
The incident comes amid continuing tensions between China and Taiwan. Beijing considers Taiwan part of its territory and has increased military and maritime activities around the island in recent years. Taiwan, meanwhile, maintains its self-governing status and continues to strengthen cooperation with regional partners concerned about stability in the Asia-Pacific.
The latest maritime dispute follows regional developments involving Japan and the Philippines, which recently announced plans to begin formal discussions regarding maritime boundaries. Chinese authorities criticized the move, viewing it as related to waters near Taiwan. Shortly afterward, Chinese state media reported the launch of a special maritime law-enforcement operation in the area east of the island.
Analysts note that commercial shipping routes around Taiwan are among the world's most important maritime corridors, carrying significant volumes of international trade. Any increase in tensions or interference with civilian navigation could attract broader international attention due to the strategic importance of these sea lanes.
While no direct confrontation was reported, the episode highlights the continuing disagreements between Beijing and Taipei over maritime jurisdiction and regional security. Observers are closely monitoring developments as both sides seek to defend their respective positions in increasingly contested waters.
