Allies seek Trump approval for Hormuz mine clearance at G7
A United Kingdom and France led coalition has completed operational plans for a multinational mine-clearing mission in the Strait of Hormuz. Allied governments plan to seek formal approval from United States President Donald Trump during the upcoming G7 summit in Évian-les-Bains, scheduled for June 15 to 17 in France. The mission depends on a ceasefire between the United States and Iran and explicit political backing from Washington.
The operation involves around 15 countries contributing naval personnel, minesweepers, unmanned underwater vehicles, and support vessels. The coalition is prepared to deploy within days of an agreement to reopen the waterway. Preparations are largely complete, although planners continue to secure additional support assets, including specialized maritime assistance ships required for sustained operations in contested waters.
Diplomatic groundwork has developed over several months. G7 foreign ministers previously agreed that any deployment would occur only after conditions stabilize and would remain strictly defensive in nature. France and the United Kingdom later committed to launching mine clearance operations once a durable ceasefire is in place. Coalition members have also discussed establishing operational communication channels with Tehran to manage technical aspects of the mission while maintaining security control within the alliance structure.
Turkey has signaled readiness to participate if formally requested, describing mine clearance as a humanitarian responsibility. The political outcome remains uncertain as allied governments wait for Trump’s position at the G7 summit. His past participation at similar gatherings has been marked by abrupt shifts in focus, adding unpredictability to the approval process for a mission viewed as central to securing global maritime traffic through one of the world’s most strategic chokepoints.
