China plans massive $295 billion investment in nationwide AI infrastructure

China is preparing a large-scale investment plan worth approximately 2 trillion yuan (around $295 billion) to significantly expand its national artificial intelligence and data infrastructure over the next five years, according to reports based on policy discussions.

The initiative aims to build a nationwide network of interconnected data centers designed to strengthen computing capacity and accelerate the country’s adoption of advanced technologies. The project is being coordinated by major government bodies, including economic planning institutions responsible for long-term development strategies.

As part of its broader technological ambitions, China seeks to reinforce its position in global competition in artificial intelligence, particularly against the United States. The plan is expected to support rapid development in areas such as machine learning systems, quantum technologies, and robotics.

State-owned telecommunications companies are expected to play a central role in operating and connecting these data facilities. The strategy also emphasizes the use of domestic technology suppliers, including firms such as Huawei Technologies, in order to reduce dependence on foreign semiconductor and AI chip providers.
