Moroccan seasonal worker dies in Huelva heat conditions
A Moroccan seasonal agricultural worker has died in the southern Spanish province of Huelva while taking part in seasonal farm work, prompting renewed attention to working conditions affecting migrant laborers in the region.
The worker, identified as Hakima, originally from Sidi Kacem in Morocco, had arrived in Spain around 40 days before her death to participate in the annual agricultural campaign. She was a mother of four. According to accounts from colleagues, she returned to her accommodation after a long shift, completed basic evening routines, and went to sleep. A forensic assessment placed her time of death at approximately 1 a.m.
Labor union representatives linked the death to extreme heat exposure, citing severe temperatures in the region during the period. They also referenced previous cases involving migrant agricultural workers in similar conditions, including a reported death in 2019 attributed to heatstroke.
Rights organizations in Andalusia issued statements emphasizing working conditions in intensive agriculture sectors that rely heavily on migrant labor. They called for stronger occupational safety enforcement, particularly in relation to heat risks, housing conditions, and preventive health measures for seasonal workers. They argued that labor protections must be applied consistently across recruitment, transport, accommodation, and field work.
The Moroccan General Workers Union said it had previously raised concerns with relevant authorities in both Morocco and Spain regarding the situation of seasonal workers. It called for stricter monitoring of contracts and improved coordination between institutions responsible for labor recruitment and workplace safety. Civil society groups have also launched efforts to contact the worker’s family in Sidi Kacem to provide documentation and explore possible legal procedures related to the case.
