Stellantis recalls over one million vehicles in the United States due to power steering defect
Automotive manufacturer Stellantis N.V. has announced the recall of more than one million vehicles in the United States following the discovery of a potential defect in the power steering system that could increase the risk of fire, according to U.S. safety regulators.
The recall was issued after the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identified a problem involving the electric hydraulic power steering pump wiring. According to the regulator, the component may overheat and potentially cause a fire, even when the vehicle is parked with the ignition turned off.
The affected vehicles include certain model years 2021 to 2025 of the Jeep Wrangler and Jeep Gladiator, two of the company’s most widely sold off-road vehicles in the U.S. market. In total, approximately 1,076,999 vehicles are included in the recall.
Stellantis stated that authorized dealerships will inspect and replace defective components at no cost to vehicle owners as part of the corrective action. The company emphasized that the safety of customers remains a priority while it works to resolve the issue.
In a separate announcement, U.S. regulators also reported an additional recall involving 17,277 vehicles due to a battery pack defect that could similarly lead to fire risks, including when the vehicles are switched off.
This latest development adds to a series of recent safety-related recalls involving Stellantis, including a previous action affecting more than 400,000 vehicles linked to potential issues with side airbag deployment.
Automotive recalls of this scale highlight the growing complexity of modern vehicle systems, particularly as manufacturers increasingly integrate advanced electrical and electronic components. Regulators continue to monitor potential safety risks to ensure compliance with strict automotive safety standards.
The NHTSA has urged affected vehicle owners to follow manufacturer instructions and arrange inspections promptly to reduce any potential safety risks associated with the defect.
