Cannes 2026: A second Palme d’Or for Cristian Mungiu
The 79th edition of the Cannes Film Festival concluded with a powerful and symbolic victory, as Romanian filmmaker Cristian Mungiu was awarded the Palme d’Or for his latest film “Fjord.” This marks his second time receiving the festival’s highest honor, after his earlier win in 2007 for “4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.”
The jury, chaired this year by South Korean director Park Chan-wook, praised a selection that highlighted diverse voices and stories from around the world. The final decision crowned a competition widely described as open and unpredictable, with several strong contenders.
“Fjord” is inspired by real events and is set in Norway. The film explores the tensions within a society that promotes openness and tolerance, yet struggles when confronted with individuals who do not conform to established expectations. Through this contrast, Mungiu delivers a critical reflection on exclusion, identity, and social boundaries.
The film’s storytelling and visual style were widely noted by critics as one of the highlights of the competition. Its universal themes and emotional depth contributed to its status as a favorite throughout the festival.
With this new award, Cristian Mungiu joins a select group of filmmakers who have won the Palme d’Or more than once, further cementing his place in contemporary world cinema.
