Australia detects first Japanese encephalitis case of the summer in Victoria

Australia has reported its first detection of the Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) this summer, after health authorities identified the virus in a mosquito trap in Victoria. According to the state’s Health Department, the infected mosquitoes were found in the Horsham Rural City Council area as part of the Arbovirus Disease Control Program.

Officials emphasized that the detection confirms the continued presence of mosquito-borne illnesses in the country, a concern that has persisted since the widespread outbreak of 2022, which led to dozens of human infections and six fatalities across several states.

Health authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant during the warmer months, particularly those spending time outdoors near areas where mosquitoes are likely to thrive. The reminder comes as eastern Australia continues to register sporadic cases, including the first human infection in Melbourne since 2022 and another confirmed earlier this year in Brisbane.

Japanese encephalitis mainly infects pigs and birds, but humans can contract the virus through bites from infected mosquitoes. Public health officials stress that preventive measures—such as using repellents, avoiding stagnant water, and wearing protective clothing—remain essential to reduce the risk of transmission.
