Spain views Morocco as a critical ally, with Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares calling it a “strategic partner of the highest order” during a recent interview with El País. Spain remains firmly supportive of Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara region, which has been a significant aspect of their foreign policy.

Albares emphasized Morocco’s crucial role in regional counterterrorism efforts and the fight against human trafficking. He also highlighted the importance of Morocco as both a strategic partner and a friendly nation for Spain and the European Union, with all EU members recognizing this partnership. He pointed to significant developments, such as the reopening of the customs office in Melilla and the opening of a new one in Ceuta, as essential steps in strengthening bilateral relations.

Addressing the long-standing dispute over the Moroccan Sahara, Albares reiterated Spain’s commitment to a UN-led solution. “After 50 years, we seek a resolution between the parties involved,” he stated. He expressed support for the efforts of the UN Secretary-General’s personal envoy, tasked with finding a resolution.

Regarding the 2022 letter to King Mohammed VI of Morocco, where Spain reaffirmed its support for Morocco’s autonomy plan, Albares explained that Spain’s position is clear and aligns with the Spanish-Moroccan declaration. He added that most EU nations share Spain's perspective.

The shift in Spain’s stance in favor of Morocco’s autonomy proposal in 2022 marked a new phase in bilateral relations, ending a period of tension. Spain and Morocco share significant economic ties, with Spain’s trade with Morocco only surpassed by its trade with the US and the UK.

Albares’ comments reflect Spain’s ongoing efforts to balance its relationships across Europe, North Africa, and the wider global stage. Spain remains committed to European security, transatlantic stability, and cultivating partnerships that benefit all parties involved.
