Morocco face Libya and Algeria in demanding WAFutsal 2026 group

Morocco will begin its bid for a fourth consecutive African futsal title against two familiar North African opponents after being drawn alongside Libya and Algeria in Group A of the 2026 Africa Cup of Nations.

The tournament, scheduled to take place in Morocco from October 12 to 21, will bring together the continent’s leading futsal nations. The group-stage draw was held Monday at the Mohammed VI Football Complex, producing a particularly demanding opening section for the defending champions.

Ranked sixth in the world, Morocco enters the competition as both reigning champion and host. Under head coach Hicham Dguig, the national team has established itself as the dominant force in African futsal, but the draw leaves little room for complacency.

A North African battle from the opening round

The presence of Libya and Algeria gives Group A a distinctly regional character, with Morocco facing two opponents capable of making the early stages highly competitive.

The meeting with Libya is expected to be particularly tactical. Libyan futsal has developed a reputation for physical intensity and disciplined organization, qualities that could test Morocco’s ability to impose its preferred style of play.

Morocco’s recent progress has strengthened the balance of power in the region, but Libya remains an opponent with enough experience and tactical discipline to punish defensive lapses.

The clash with Algeria will add another layer of pressure. A North African derby at this level is likely to bring an intense atmosphere, with concentration and emotional control potentially proving just as important as technical quality.

Zambia could still prove dangerous

Zambia completes Group A and may appear, on paper, to be the less intimidating opponent. Yet Morocco cannot afford to underestimate any fixture, particularly in a tournament where a single dropped result could complicate the route to the knockout stages.

For the hosts, the priority will be to secure a strong start while managing the physical demands of a group containing two regional rivals.

Egypt and Angola headline Group B

Elsewhere, Group B offers another intriguing contest, with Egypt and Angola emerging as the main contenders for the top positions.

The Egyptian team brings extensive continental experience, while Angola has developed into a serious force in African futsal. Their meeting could become one of the defining group-stage encounters of the tournament.

With Morocco entering the competition as a three-time defending champion and the highest-ranked side in the field, expectations will be exceptionally high.

Morocco under pressure to deliver at home

Playing on home soil gives Morocco a significant advantage, but it also increases the pressure surrounding the tournament.

Dguig’s side will be expected not only to retain the African crown but also to demonstrate why Morocco has become one of the continent’s reference points in futsal.

The road to a fourth straight title will begin with two high-stakes Maghreb derbies. If Morocco can navigate those challenges successfully and avoid a surprise result against Zambia, the defending champions will strengthen their position among the leading contenders for another continental triumph.
