Colombian professional football has been temporarily suspended following a powerful earthquake that struck the western part of the country, leaving dozens of people dead and causing extensive damage across several affected areas.

The Colombian professional football league announced a one-week suspension of domestic competitions after assessing the situation in communities affected by the disaster. The 7.4-magnitude earthquake struck western Colombia on August 10, triggering a major emergency response and leaving a heavy human and material toll.

According to the latest reports cited by local authorities, the death toll has risen to 164, while rescue teams continue to assess the damage and assist affected communities.

The league said that all 36 professional clubs competing in Colombia's top two divisions would use the suspension period to support relief and recovery efforts. Clubs are expected to mobilize their resources and contribute to assistance programs for communities impacted by the earthquake.

The decision reflects the broader role that sport can play during national emergencies. Rather than continuing with the usual competition schedule, Colombian football organizations chose to prioritize humanitarian support and solidarity with the affected population.

The earthquake has caused significant destruction in several western regions, with emergency services continuing rescue operations and evaluating the full extent of the damage. Authorities are also working to restore essential services and provide assistance to displaced or affected residents.

The impact has extended beyond Colombia's domestic competitions. South American football's governing body, CONMEBOL, also postponed two continental matches following the disaster, citing respect for the victims and safety considerations.

Among the postponed fixtures were the Copa Sudamericana meeting between Colombian club Independiente Santa Fe and Argentina's River Plate, as well as the Copa Libertadores match involving Deportes Tolima and Independiente del Valle.

The suspension of football competitions highlights the scale of the emergency facing Colombia. With rescue and recovery operations still underway, the country's football community has opted to stand alongside affected communities, emphasizing that sporting events can resume once conditions become safer and more stable.
