Morocco Expands Student Housing: Private Sector Partnerships Bring 12,000 New University Beds
The Moroccan government has taken significant steps to address student accommodation needs through a series of strategic partnerships with private investors. Higher Education, Scientific Research and Innovation Minister Azzedine El Midaoui announced on Tuesday at the House of Counselors that 18 partnership agreements have been signed to develop new university residences, with a total capacity of approximately 12,000 beds.
Speaking during an oral questions session in response to the Istiqlalian Group for Unity and Egalitarianism, El Midaoui reported that eight university residences, providing 6,400 beds, are already operational. These facilities represent a successful implementation of the ministry's initiative to enhance student housing capacity through private sector collaboration.
The ministry is developing an innovative approach to student accommodation, focusing on creating next-generation university residences. This vision involves partnerships with various stakeholders, including private enterprises, regional councils, and territorial authorities, aligned with Morocco's advanced regionalization framework.
El Midaoui also detailed ongoing infrastructure improvements, noting that while some older university residences are undergoing renovation, others in good condition require only routine maintenance. He emphasized that newly constructed facilities fully comply with current housing standards.
Recent developments include the inauguration of university residences in Kenitra and Taza, along with an expansion of existing facilities in Nador. Construction projects are currently underway in Mohammedia and Al Hoceima.
The minister further revealed plans for additional student housing projects in Beni Mellal, Taroudant, Larache, Oujda, and Safi, which will add 7,500 beds to the national capacity. These developments will be funded through the African Development Bank, marking a significant investment in Morocco's educational infrastructure.
This comprehensive initiative demonstrates Morocco's commitment to expanding and modernizing student housing infrastructure while fostering public-private partnerships to meet growing educational needs.
