A convoluted tapestry of corruption and international drug trafficking is coming to light in Morocco, as investigations into the criminal enterprise of the infamous "Desert Escobar," El Hadj Ahmed ben Ibrahim, intensify.

Ibrahim, a Malian national dubbed both the "Godfather" and the "Desert Kingpin" locally, faced initial arrest in 2019 at Casablanca airport on charges of drug trafficking and money laundering. Now, recent revelations are surfacing, linking influential politicians and businessmen in Morocco to Ibrahim's extensive illegal activities.

The past week witnessed the arrest of Said Naciri, President of the esteemed Moroccan football club Wydad AC, and Abdenebi Biioui, an MP and infrastructure magnate. These high-profile detentions sent shockwaves through the nation's political landscape. Both men are suspected of colluding with Ibrahim since 2010 in trafficking "tons of drugs" along Moroccan coastlines, destined for distribution across North Africa and beyond.

Ibrahim gained notoriety in 2015 when he was detained in Mauritania under an Interpol warrant while serving a four-year sentence for unrelated smuggling charges. Upon his return to Morocco in 2019, Ibrahim accused Naciri and Biioui of betrayal, alleging that they seized his assets after his latest arrest. This triggered a flurry of legal complaints, with various criminal accusations lodged against the duo and more than 20 others.

As investigators untangle Ibrahim's intricate web, a portrait emerges of a career criminal who transitioned from humble beginnings in Mali to dominating the regional drug trade. His journey started with assisting a French traveler, eventually leading him to the car sales business, and later, the realms of gold and narcotics. Connections in Bolivia propelled him to establish a multinational empire, complete with opulent properties such as a private island and luxury hotels.

With the general prosecution promising further revelations and 20 suspects already remanded to jail, Morocco anxiously awaits the potential scale of this scandal. As judicial probes and political repercussions persist, one undeniable truth emerges the dismantling of the "Desert Escobar's" operation is profoundly shaking Moroccan power structures to their very core.
