Nigeria: Seven killed in mosque explosion in the northeast
Seven people lost their lives on Wednesday following an explosion inside a mosque in Maiduguri, a major city in northeastern Nigeria, according to local sources and security officials.
The incident occurred during evening prayers in a busy area of the city, where worshippers had gathered in large numbers. Witnesses reported that the explosion took place inside the mosque, causing panic among those present. Authorities have not yet released a final official death toll.
Nigeria’s police confirmed the explosion and stated that a bomb disposal team was deployed to secure the area and investigate the circumstances of the blast. No armed group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
Maiduguri is the capital of Borno State, a region that has faced years of instability due to an insurgency led by extremist groups, including Boko Haram and its affiliates. Although the city has experienced a relative period of calm in recent years, sporadic attacks continue to raise concerns about security.
The insurgency in northeastern Nigeria, which began in 2009, has caused tens of thousands of deaths and forced millions of people to flee their homes. While violence has declined compared to previous years, analysts warn that armed groups still have the capacity to carry out deadly attacks, particularly in vulnerable areas.
