Reliance-Disney’s JioStar launches legal action against Zee over Bollywood film rights
A legal dispute has escalated in India’s entertainment industry as JioStar, the joint venture between Reliance and Disney, has taken legal action against rival broadcaster Zee Entertainment Enterprises over alleged unauthorized airing of Bollywood films.
The case highlights growing tensions within India’s highly competitive $30 billion media and entertainment sector, where broadcasters fiercely compete for exclusive content rights.
JioStar, backed by billionaire Mukesh Ambani, accused Zee Entertainment of repeatedly broadcasting several films without proper licensing. According to legal documents, the dispute involves around a dozen movies that were allegedly aired multiple times on Zee’s channels, despite the rights being held by the Reliance-Disney venture at the time.
The contested films reportedly include major Bollywood productions featuring some of India’s most popular actors. JioStar claims that Zee broadcast these titles approximately 20 times without authorization, describing the actions as repeated violations of intellectual property rights.
In its legal filing, JioStar described Zee as a “habitual infringer,” accusing the company of ongoing unauthorized use of copyrighted content. Zee, however, has previously argued that some of the broadcasts were accidental, suggesting a possible misunderstanding over licensing arrangements.
This new legal confrontation comes at a time when both companies are already engaged in separate arbitration proceedings in London related to a collapsed cricket broadcasting deal, further intensifying rivalry between the two media giants.
Industry analysts say the dispute reflects broader challenges in India’s rapidly expanding entertainment market, where competition for digital and television rights has become increasingly aggressive.
Experts also note that legal battles over content ownership are likely to become more frequent as streaming platforms and traditional broadcasters continue to compete for dominance in India’s evolving media landscape.
