Ben Gvir sparks controversy with remarks about settlement plans in southern Lebanon
Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir triggered strong reactions after referring to what he described as a “settlement plan” concerning southern Lebanon during a public speech in Jerusalem.
The comments were made during events linked to Jerusalem Day, an annual Israeli commemoration associated with the 1967 annexation of East Jerusalem. Ben Gvir, known for his ultranationalist positions, also repeated calls for the annexation of the occupied West Bank and promoted policies encouraging the emigration of Palestinians from Gaza and the West Bank.
The statements come at a sensitive time as indirect negotiations and diplomatic efforts continue to reduce tensions between Israel and Lebanon following months of military confrontation along the border.
Israeli forces currently maintain positions in parts of southern Lebanon described by Israeli authorities as security buffer zones. Although the Israeli government officially denies having territorial ambitions in Lebanon, some far-right activists and organizations have publicly supported the idea of expanding Israeli settlements toward the north.
During his speech, Ben Gvir referred to a broader ideological vision concerning territories considered by nationalist groups as part of “Greater Israel.” His remarks also included criticism of the territorial divisions established under the Oslo Accords in the occupied West Bank.
Political observers say the comments could increase regional tensions and complicate ongoing diplomatic discussions aimed at stabilizing the border area between Israel and Lebanon.
The issue of settlements remains one of the most controversial topics in Middle Eastern politics. International organizations and many governments consider Israeli settlements in occupied territories illegal under international law, while Israeli nationalist groups defend them on historical and security grounds.
Analysts also warn that statements from influential far-right figures may intensify concerns about the future of peace efforts and regional stability, especially amid continuing conflicts in Gaza and cross-border tensions involving Lebanon.
