UK warns firms to prepare for risks from frontier Ai models
British authorities have urged companies to strengthen their preparedness against emerging risks linked to advanced artificial intelligence systems. In a joint statement released on Friday, the UK Treasury, the Bank of England, and the Financial Conduct Authority emphasized the growing cybersecurity challenges posed by so-called frontier AI models.
Officials warned that modern AI systems already demonstrate cyber capabilities that can surpass those of skilled human experts, operating at greater speed, larger scale, and lower cost. They stressed that if such technologies are misused, they could significantly increase cyber threats targeting businesses, customers, and the broader financial system.
Regulators highlighted potential risks to financial stability, market integrity, and institutional security, encouraging firms to take proactive steps to mitigate possible damage.
The warning follows earlier concerns expressed by Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey, who pointed to increasing cybersecurity risks associated with emerging AI-driven tools, including systems capable of enhancing complex cyberattacks against financial infrastructure.
