Air traffic at Helsinki Airport was temporarily suspended for several hours following a drone threat alert in southern Finland, raising concerns over regional security and airspace safety.

Finnish authorities halted flights to and from the country’s main international airport during the early hours of the morning as security services assessed the situation. Operations later resumed, although delays and cancellations were expected throughout the day.

The alert came after Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo reported increased drone-related surveillance activity in the Uusimaa region, where Helsinki is located. Finnish armed forces strengthened monitoring measures while emergency authorities advised residents to remain cautious.

The incident reflects growing security concerns in Northern Europe linked to the increased use of drones near sensitive infrastructure and national borders. Finnish authorities have recently investigated several cases involving unidentified drones entering the country’s airspace.

Some of these incidents have been linked to devices believed to have originated from the conflict surrounding Ukraine, although investigations remain ongoing. Officials continue to emphasize the importance of protecting public safety and maintaining strict surveillance over strategic transport infrastructure.

The temporary disruption at Helsinki Airport highlights the broader security challenges facing European countries amid evolving geopolitical tensions and the growing use of unmanned aerial technologies.
