Leftist Sanchez advances to Peru presidential runoff after extended vote count
After a prolonged national vote tally lasting several weeks, official results confirm that left-wing candidate Roberto Sanchez has finished in second place in Peru’s presidential election held on April 12. With all ballots now counted, the electoral authority has validated his position in the upcoming runoff election scheduled for June 7.
Sanchez is set to face right-wing contender Keiko Fujimori, who led the first round. The finalization of the results followed a slow and closely watched counting process that drew widespread attention across the country.
The extended vote count also sparked political tension, with some candidates raising concerns about possible irregularities. Among them was conservative candidate Rafael López Aliaga, who remained close to Sanchez in the standings for much of the process but ultimately did not advance.
Peru now moves toward a decisive second round that will determine its next president amid a politically divided landscape.
