Germany’s Merz urges diplomatic solution to end Iran conflict
Germany is intensifying diplomatic efforts to help end the ongoing conflict involving Iran, as concerns grow across Europe about the political, economic and security consequences of a prolonged war.
Speaking during a visit to military exercises in northern Europe, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stressed that diplomacy remains the most viable path to de-escalation. He said Berlin is working with international partners to encourage dialogue and prevent the conflict from expanding further across the region.
The German leader underlined that a lasting war would have serious implications not only for the Middle East but also for European stability. According to him, disruptions in energy routes and growing geopolitical tensions could affect the broader Euro-Atlantic area, particularly if maritime trade routes are threatened.
Merz also referred to the strategic importance of the Strait of Hormuz, a vital corridor for global oil shipments. Any disruption there, he warned, could influence global markets and energy supplies, making a diplomatic solution even more urgent.
The comments were delivered while the chancellor observed multinational troops participating in the Cold Response drills, which involve forces from several members of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. The exercise highlights the alliance’s readiness to operate in challenging environments while maintaining regional security.
During the discussions, Merz emphasized that many Western nations share the objective of ensuring stability in the Middle East and preventing further escalation. At the same time, he cautioned that the longer the conflict continues, the more complex the path to peace becomes.
Germany, he said, is committed to working with its allies and international partners to open diplomatic channels that could lead to a negotiated settlement. For Berlin, preventing a wider regional crisis and maintaining economic stability remain key priorities.
