Mahindra consolidates commercial vehicle operations with truck and bus business transfer
Indian automotive giant Mahindra & Mahindra has announced plans to transfer its truck and bus business to its listed subsidiary SML Mahindra as part of a broader effort to streamline its commercial vehicle operations under a single corporate structure.
The transfer, valued at 5.25 billion rupees (approximately $55 million), will bring Mahindra's commercial vehicle activities together within SML Mahindra, strengthening the subsidiary's role in the group's strategy for the truck and bus segment.
The restructuring follows Mahindra's acquisition of a controlling stake in SML Isuzu in August 2025 from Sumitomo Corporation and Isuzu Motors. Following the transaction, the listed manufacturer was renamed SML Mahindra, reflecting its closer integration into the Mahindra group.
By consolidating its commercial vehicle operations, Mahindra aims to improve operational efficiency, simplify management structures and create a stronger platform to compete in India's growing transportation market.
The Indian commercial vehicle sector has been undergoing significant changes, driven by rising demand for logistics services, infrastructure development and the transition toward cleaner mobility solutions.
Mahindra has traditionally been a major player in India's automotive market, with a strong presence in utility vehicles, electric mobility and commercial transportation. The latest restructuring highlights the group's ambition to strengthen its position in a segment where competition remains intense.
The integration of truck and bus activities under SML Mahindra is expected to provide greater strategic focus and allow the company to better coordinate product development, manufacturing capabilities and market expansion.
The move comes as Indian automakers increasingly reorganize their businesses to adapt to evolving customer needs, technological transformation and changing regulatory requirements in the transportation industry.
