Two French children found alone by roadside in Portugal
Two young children of French nationality, aged 3 and 5, were found alone on Tuesday evening along a road connecting Alcácer do Sal to the Comporta coastal area in southern Portugal. The discovery prompted an immediate investigation by the authorities.
According to the National Republican Guard (Portugal), the children were taken into custody after being found and later transferred to child protection services. Officials confirmed that both minors were safe and received initial medical checks at a local hospital before being placed under the supervision of French consular services.
Authorities stated that no missing persons report had been filed prior to the incident, raising questions about the circumstances in which the children were left unattended. Local media have suggested the possibility of abandonment, although no official conclusion has been reached at this stage of the investigation.
The French embassy in Portugal has been informed and is cooperating with local authorities, although it has not made any public statement regarding the case.
Child protection agencies emphasized that the priority is ensuring the safety and well-being of the minors while the investigation continues to determine how and why they ended up alone on the roadside.
The case has drawn attention in both Portugal and France, highlighting concerns about child safety and cross-border protection mechanisms within Europe.
