Sovereign cloud partnership between Thales and Google cloud expands into Germany
The European sovereign cloud initiative led by French technology group Thales Group in partnership with Google Cloud is expanding its operations into Germany, marking a new step in Europe’s push for digital sovereignty.
Following its deployment in France under the S3NS project, the partnership will launch a similar sovereign cloud offering in Germany by the end of the year. The new structure will be fully owned by Thales Germany and is designed to provide a “trusted cloud” environment for sensitive data belonging to public institutions and critical industries.
The infrastructure will integrate Google Cloud technologies while remaining fully operated under German jurisdiction. It will be physically hosted in Germany, legally governed by German law, and independently managed to ensure that sensitive data remains protected from extraterritorial access risks.
This model aims to address growing European concerns about data sovereignty and cybersecurity by combining advanced cloud capabilities with strict regulatory control. In France, the S3NS initiative has already achieved high-level cybersecurity certification under national standards, allowing it to host highly sensitive workloads for both public and private sector clients.
Several major organizations, including industrial and energy-sector companies, are already using the system in France to securely migrate and process critical data that previously could not be stored in public cloud environments.
The German expansion is also expected to comply with emerging local regulatory frameworks, reinforcing Europe’s broader strategy to strengthen digital independence while maintaining access to global cloud innovation.
