Bulgaria requests US visa-free travel for its citizens, says prime minister
The Prime Minister of Bulgaria, Rumen Radev, has stated that he raised the issue of visa-free travel for Bulgarian citizens during a phone conversation with U.S. President Donald Trump. The discussion comes as Sofia continues efforts to strengthen bilateral relations with Washington and secure easier mobility for its nationals.
According to the Bulgarian leader, he urged the United States to urgently consider lifting visa requirements, describing the matter as a priority for his government. The request reflects long-standing diplomatic efforts by Bulgaria to join the U.S. visa waiver program, which allows citizens of selected countries to travel without a visa for short stays.
Bulgaria, a member of NATO, plays a strategic role in regional security and hosts regular cooperation activities with U.S. forces. Officials have also confirmed that American military aircraft currently use Bulgarian airspace and facilities under temporary arrangements.
The Bulgarian government has recently intensified its diplomatic engagement with both U.S. political and defense officials, aiming to expand cooperation in security, defense logistics, and economic mobility. The prime minister also indicated expectations that military coordination agreements may be extended beyond current deadlines.
Analysts note that visa waiver negotiations are complex and depend on strict security and immigration criteria. However, improved diplomatic relations between Sofia and Washington could increase Bulgaria’s chances of being considered in future policy adjustments.
