Fujimori takes slim lead over Sanchez ahead of Peru presidential runoff

A new opinion poll in Peru indicates that conservative candidate Keiko Fujimori has gained a slight advantage over left-wing rival Roberto Sanchez ahead of the country’s presidential runoff election scheduled for June 7.

According to the latest Ipsos Peru survey published by local media, Fujimori is projected to receive 39% of voter support, while Sanchez is expected to secure 35%. The poll reflects a tighter but evolving race as both candidates intensify their campaigns across the country.

The previous Ipsos survey conducted in April had shown both candidates tied at 38%, highlighting a recent shift in voter preferences. Political analysts believe the change may reflect growing concerns among undecided voters regarding economic stability and governance.

Fujimori, leader of the Popular Force party and daughter of former President Alberto Fujimori, is participating in her fourth presidential campaign. She finished first in the initial election round held on April 12, obtaining 17% of the vote.

Meanwhile, Sanchez, who is associated with former President Pedro Castillo’s political movement, advanced to the runoff after narrowly securing second place with 12% of the votes in the first round.

The survey also revealed that a significant portion of the electorate remains uncertain. Around 26% of respondents said they may either cast a blank ballot or abstain from supporting either candidate, showing continued political division within the country.

Both candidates are expected to participate in a televised debate on May 31, while their technical and economic teams are scheduled to meet in a separate debate on May 24.

Although opposition to Fujimori’s candidacy remains relatively high, recent polling suggests that public resistance toward her has slightly declined compared to previous months.
