Samsung labor union suspends strike after last-minute deal
Samsung Electronics and its main labor union reached a provisional agreement that halted a planned large-scale strike involving tens of thousands of workers. The agreement was concluded after direct government involvement in negotiations that intensified following a breakdown in earlier talks.
The strike, which was set to involve roughly 48,000 employees, had been scheduled to begin on Thursday. Negotiations had previously collapsed after extended discussions failed to bridge disagreements over compensation structures. The situation escalated until the labor minister stepped in to facilitate direct talks between both sides.
The dispute centered on Samsung’s bonus system. The union demanded that a fixed share of operating profits be allocated to performance bonuses and called for the removal of existing caps on payouts. Management opposed the proposal, citing financial risks and the volatility of the semiconductor industry.
An agreement was eventually reached during a final round of discussions held outside the formal labor relations commission process. The union has suspended the strike and will submit the deal to a membership vote. The outcome of that vote will determine whether industrial action resumes.
The conflict highlighted broader tensions within Samsung’s workforce and corporate structure. The dispute also unfolded against the backdrop of global semiconductor shortages, increasing pressure on production stability and supply chains tied to artificial intelligence infrastructure.
