Abandoned disabled baby in Austria sparks mobilization to find foster family
A newborn baby with severe disabilities has been left in hospital care in western Austria since birth, prompting a local official to launch an urgent appeal to find a foster family.
The child was born in January at the Feldkirch Hospital, in the region of Vorarlberg, and is reported to have significant health conditions, including skull malformation and fused fingers. Since birth, the infant has remained under medical care and has not returned home.
According to Austrian media reports, the parents were deeply affected by the medical situation and decided not to take the child home after delivery. The case remained largely private until it was brought to public attention through a social media appeal by regional official Martina Rüscher, who called urgently for a foster family.
Her message quickly spread online, attracting significant public attention. While many people responded positively and expressed willingness to help, the situation also initially caused confusion, with some questioning whether the appeal was genuine. Authorities later confirmed that the search for a foster placement was real.
Following the public appeal, several families reportedly expressed interest in caring for the child. Regional authorities stated that child protection services have now taken over the case to ensure the infant’s safety, privacy, and long-term welfare.
Officials emphasized that the priority is to secure a stable and supportive environment for the child while respecting confidentiality. The case has also highlighted the role of foster care systems in supporting children with complex medical needs, particularly in situations where biological families are unable to provide care.
Social services continue to evaluate potential placements as part of a structured child protection process designed to ensure the best possible outcome for the newborn.
