Morocco approves 3,000 MW of renewable energy projects in early 2026
Morocco has approved large-scale energy projects totaling around 3,000 megawatts during the first quarter of 2026, marking a significant acceleration in the country’s power sector expansion. The announcement was made during a parliamentary session focused on national energy policy and investment strategy.
The projects represent a combined investment of approximately 22 billion dirhams and account for nearly one-third of the country’s current installed electricity capacity. The rapid approval pace reflects a broader push to expand generation capacity while shifting the energy mix toward cleaner sources and reducing long-term dependence on imported fossil fuels.
According to official data, Morocco has approved 66 renewable energy projects since 2021, compared with 23 projects in the previous decade. This sharp increase highlights a structural change in the country’s energy governance, driven by policy reforms aimed at accelerating approvals and attracting private investment into solar, wind, and hybrid energy systems.
The share of renewable energy in the national electricity mix has increased from 37 percent in 2021 to 46 percent in 2025. Authorities say the growth is supported by new regulatory frameworks that allow greater participation from private actors, including industrial operators and households through self-production systems connected to the grid.
A broader investment plan worth 120 billion dirhams is also underway to strengthen electricity infrastructure by 2030. The strategy prioritizes renewable sources while maintaining grid stability and expanding transmission capacity to meet rising demand from industry, urban growth, and electrification.
Officials also pointed to parallel developments in the downstream energy sector, including the expansion of fuel distribution infrastructure with more than 800 service stations nationwide. Authorities describe the overall approach as part of a long-term effort to reinforce energy sovereignty, improve supply security, and support economic competitiveness through more diversified energy sources.
