France appoints Philippe Lalliot as new ambassador to Morocco
The French government has officially appointed Philippe Lalliot as the new ambassador of France to Morocco, replacing Christophe Lecourtier, who recently assumed leadership of the French Development Agency (AFD).
The appointment was confirmed through a presidential decree published in France’s Official Journal on May 15. The decision reflects France’s intention to maintain strong diplomatic relations with Morocco, a key strategic partner in North Africa.
Lalliot is an experienced diplomat with a long international career within the French Ministry for Europe and Foreign Affairs. Since 2023, he has served as director of the Crisis and Support Center, an institution responsible for managing international emergencies and supporting French citizens abroad.
Over the years, he has held several important diplomatic positions, including roles at the French Embassy in the United States, Consul General in New York, ambassador to UNESCO, ambassador to the Netherlands, and ambassador to Senegal and Gambia.
Political observers view his appointment as part of France’s broader efforts to strengthen cooperation with Morocco in areas such as economic development, security, cultural exchange, and regional diplomacy.
Relations between Rabat and Paris have experienced periods of tension in recent years, but both countries have recently shown interest in reinforcing political dialogue and strategic partnerships.
Lalliot is expected to officially assume his new responsibilities in Rabat by the end of May.
