Xi and Putin reaffirm ‘unshakable’ ties amid global tensions

The leaders of China and Russia reaffirmed the strength of their strategic partnership during a high-level meeting in Beijing, despite ongoing international crises and geopolitical uncertainty.

Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin emphasized the resilience of relations between their countries, describing their cooperation as stable and resistant to external pressure.

The meeting took place shortly after diplomatic efforts by U.S. President Donald Trump aimed at easing tensions with Beijing. Analysts believe Moscow is closely monitoring any possible changes in relations between China and the United States.

During the discussions, the two leaders addressed several international issues, including the war in Ukraine, tensions in the Middle East, global energy markets, and economic cooperation between their countries.

Xi Jinping stated that renewed conflict in the Middle East would be undesirable, while both leaders highlighted the importance of maintaining strategic coordination during a period of global instability.

Economic and energy cooperation also remained central topics. Russia continues to strengthen energy exports to China, particularly oil and gas supplies, as Moscow seeks alternatives to European markets following Western sanctions linked to the war in Ukraine.

Among the major projects discussed was the proposed “Power of Siberia 2” gas pipeline, which would connect Russian gas fields in Siberia to China. The project is considered strategically important for both countries, although negotiations and implementation have progressed slowly.

China and Russia have significantly expanded political and economic cooperation in recent years, particularly after 2022. Both governments continue to advocate for a multipolar international order and frequently coordinate positions on global affairs.
