North Korea: Kim Jong Un unanimously re-elected

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has been unanimously re-elected as Secretary General of the Workers’ Party of Korea, according to official state media reports following the party’s ninth congress held in Pyongyang.

The decision to renew his mandate at the head of the ruling party, which has governed the country since the mid-20th century, was reportedly adopted in line with the unanimous will of the delegates attending the congress. During the gathering, senior military officials reaffirmed their loyalty to the leader, underscoring the regime’s emphasis on unity and centralized authority.

State sources highlighted that under Kim’s leadership, the country’s military deterrence, particularly its nuclear capabilities, has been significantly strengthened. Authorities also stressed ongoing efforts to modernize the Korean People’s Army and transform it into a more advanced and powerful force.

The congress, which began on February 19 in Pyongyang, is considered the most important political event in the country and traditionally serves as a platform to outline strategic policies and leadership directions. While Kim previously suggested that the meeting would unveil the next phase of the nuclear weapons program, no detailed announcements have yet been officially disclosed, despite images released by state media showing large missile launch systems on display.

In his opening remarks, the leader also pledged to improve living standards, acknowledging persistent economic challenges and recurring food shortages affecting the population. North Korea continues to face strict international sanctions linked to its nuclear and ballistic missile activities.

Chinese President Xi Jinping congratulated Kim on his re-election and expressed readiness to deepen bilateral cooperation, reflecting the longstanding diplomatic ties between Beijing and Pyongyang.

The congress also approved revisions to internal party rules aimed at reinforcing discipline and consolidating organizational cohesion, as the leadership seeks to maintain tight control over political structures and governance.
