Italgas posts 25% increase in first-half earnings after 2i Rete Gas acquisition
Italgas, Europe's largest gas distribution company, reported a strong financial performance in the first half of 2026, with core earnings rising by 25% year-on-year as the group benefited from operational improvements following its acquisition of rival 2i Rete Gas.
The Italian energy infrastructure company said its adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortisation (EBITDA) reached €1.07 billion for the January-June period, matching market expectations compiled by LSEG analysts.
Acquisition drives efficiency gains
The increase in profitability was largely supported by efficiency improvements linked to the integration of 2i Rete Gas, a strategic move that expanded Italgas' position in the European gas distribution market.
The acquisition has allowed the company to strengthen its operational scale while creating opportunities for cost optimization and greater network efficiency.
Italgas has been focusing on improving infrastructure management as energy companies across Europe adapt to changing market conditions and the transition toward more sustainable energy systems.
Strong position in European energy infrastructure
As one of Europe's largest gas distributors, Italgas manages extensive distribution networks and plays a key role in Italy's energy infrastructure.
The company's latest results highlight the potential benefits of consolidation in the sector, as larger operators seek greater efficiency and investment capacity.
The strong first-half performance provides momentum for Italgas as it continues integrating its expanded asset base and pursuing modernization projects.
Focus on future energy transition
Beyond short-term financial gains, Italgas continues to invest in the evolution of gas networks and technologies designed to support the changing energy landscape.
The company has been exploring digitalization and infrastructure upgrades aimed at improving efficiency while preparing networks for future energy requirements.
With higher earnings and an expanded operational footprint, Italgas enters the second half of 2026 with a strengthened position in Europe's evolving energy market.
