Prabowo’s approval rating falls to 51.1% as Indonesians raise economic concerns
Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has seen a significant decline in public support, with his approval rating falling to 51.1% in July 2026, according to a new survey that highlights growing concerns over economic conditions and governance.
The poll conducted by Saiful Mujani Research and Consulting (SMRC) indicates that perceptions of a weakening economy have become a major factor affecting public confidence in the president, more than a year and a half after he took office.
Economic concerns weigh on public confidence
SMRC executive director Deni Irvani said dissatisfaction with economic conditions was the main reason behind the decline in Prabowo’s approval rating.
Nearly half of respondents, or 49.4%, described the country’s economic situation as “bad” or “very bad,” while only 15.7% considered economic conditions positive. This marks a sharp change from November 2025, when around 40% of respondents expressed a favorable view of the economy.
The survey suggests that official economic growth figures have not necessarily translated into a stronger perception of personal financial improvement among many Indonesians.
Political concerns and law enforcement issues
The poll also showed increasing dissatisfaction with political developments and law enforcement.
Around 42.8% of respondents rated Prabowo’s handling of political issues negatively, compared with 23% in November. Approval of his political performance dropped to 13.5%, down from 35.8% during the earlier survey period.
Concerns over law enforcement were also significant, with 37.6% of participants describing the situation as poor or very poor.
Support declines after strong electoral start
Prabowo began his presidency in October 2024 following a decisive election victory, campaigning on promises to fight corruption and accelerate Indonesia’s economic growth.
His administration has set ambitious targets, including raising annual gross domestic product growth from around 5% toward 8%.
However, the latest survey indicates that economic expectations and everyday experiences are playing an increasingly important role in shaping public perceptions of his leadership.
Survey reflects changing political landscape
The SMRC survey gathered responses from 749 people between July 5 and July 19, 2026, with an estimated margin of error of 3.7%.
Prabowo’s approval rating had previously reached 81.2% in November 2025 before declining to 66.4% in a survey conducted between late February and early March.
The latest figures highlight the challenge facing the Indonesian president as he seeks to maintain public support while delivering on his economic and governance commitments.
