UN secretary-general calls for stronger international support for Syria
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has called on the international community to step up its political, economic and humanitarian support for Syria, stressing that sustained international engagement will be essential to the country’s recovery and reconstruction.
Speaking at a press conference in Damascus on Sunday at the conclusion of his visit to Syria, Guterres reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to supporting the Syrian people during what he described as a critical period for the country.
The UN chief said Syria’s recovery would require long-term international assistance, including investment in infrastructure, the restoration of essential public services, and greater support for education and healthcare. He also highlighted the importance of creating employment opportunities and ensuring that refugees and displaced people can return safely, voluntarily and with dignity.
Guterres further stressed the need to reconnect Syria with regional and international economies, arguing that economic recovery and stability are essential to rebuilding the country and improving living conditions for its population.
Addressing the humanitarian situation, the UN secretary-general said that current aid covers only around 20 percent of Syria’s needs. He therefore urged the international community to increase funding while shifting greater attention toward economic recovery, the reintegration of refugees and displaced communities, and long-term reconstruction efforts.
According to Guterres, rebuilding Syria and strengthening its stability should be considered a shared interest for both the region and the wider international community.
The UN secretary-general arrived in Syria on Saturday as part of a historic visit, reportedly the first by a United Nations secretary-general to the country since 2009.
His visit comes as Syria continues to face significant humanitarian and economic challenges, making international support a key factor in efforts to promote recovery, reconstruction and long-term stability.
