Egypt expands presidential oversight with restructuring of Future of Egypt authority
Egypt has approved a sweeping restructuring of the Future of Egypt economic body, transforming the military-linked organization into a powerful national authority that will report directly to President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi as the government continues to consolidate oversight of strategic economic sectors.
The new legislation, published in Egypt's official gazette on Monday, significantly broadens the institution's mandate, positioning it as an umbrella authority with expanded powers over development projects, public assets and key industries.
Broader economic mandate
Under the new legal framework, the authority will be able to absorb state-owned land and companies while overseeing tax-exempt sustainable development zones. It will also gain the ability to manage additional investment funds, reinforcing its role as a central player in Egypt's long-term economic planning.
The restructuring reflects Cairo's strategy of concentrating responsibility for major national projects within institutions that can coordinate agricultural, industrial and infrastructure development under direct presidential supervision.
Growing influence across strategic sectors
Originally established to support national development initiatives, the Future of Egypt authority has steadily expanded its influence over the country's economy in recent years.
Since 2024, the organization has managed one of the world's largest wheat import programs, placing it at the center of Egypt's food security strategy. Its responsibilities have since widened to include oversight of major lakes and fisheries, while it has also become the largest shareholder in the Egyptian Commodities Exchange.
Beyond food and commodity markets, the authority has diversified into several high-profile sectors, including residential real estate development, construction projects, renewable energy and the production of infant formula, illustrating its increasingly broad economic footprint.
Centralizing strategic development
The latest reform signals Egypt's intention to strengthen centralized management of strategic assets and accelerate large-scale development initiatives through a single institution with an expanded operational mandate.
With direct reporting lines to the presidency and enhanced authority over public resources, the restructured Future of Egypt body is expected to play an even more influential role in shaping the country's economic priorities across agriculture, industry and infrastructure in the years ahead.
