Morocco Reaffirms Commitment to Regional Security at 5+5 Defense Meeting in Madrid

The nation emphasizes its strategic role in fostering peace and tackling emerging security challenges across the Mediterranean.

Morocco has reiterated its dedication to advancing peace and stability in the Mediterranean region during the 20th Defense Ministers' meeting of the "5+5 Defense" Initiative held in Madrid. Representing the country, Abdeltif Loudyi, Minister Delegate to the Head of Government in charge of the Administration of National Defense, highlighted Morocco's commitment to addressing shared security concerns and spearheading collaborative solutions.

The forum brought together defense leaders from member countries to assess 2024’s progress and outline priorities for 2025. Loudyi underlined Morocco’s proactive stance on regional security under King Mohammed VI’s leadership, emphasizing that socio-economic development and collective security go hand in hand.

Tackling Regional Threats

The Minister pointed to pressing issues, such as illegal immigration and the escalating threat of terrorism, as key challenges for the Mediterranean region. He underscored Morocco's readiness to collaborate bilaterally and multilaterally, advocating for a holistic, shared-responsibility approach to counter these risks.

“Morocco supports comprehensive strategies that integrate developmental initiatives and engage stakeholders from both shores of the Western Mediterranean,” Loudyi stated. He emphasized the importance of pragmatic, cooperative solutions tailored to the region’s unique needs.

Climate Change as a Security Concern

A significant aspect of the meeting was a discussion on climate change’s impact on security dynamics in the Mediterranean. Loudyi praised a recent study that assessed the region's vulnerabilities to climate disruptions, emphasizing its findings as a foundation for resilience-building strategies. He commended the research as a pivotal step toward mitigating climate-related security risks.

Fostering Collaboration and Strategic Dialogue

During the meeting, Loudyi expressed appreciation for Spain’s 2024 presidency of the 5+5 Initiative, applauding its leadership in fostering multilateral cooperation. He also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of member nations in transforming the forum into a robust platform for dialogue, consultation, and knowledge exchange on shared security priorities.

As the groundwork for the 2025 action plan is laid, Morocco reaffirmed its pledge to champion peace, stability, and sustainable solutions to emerging challenges. By promoting cooperative strategies and addressing issues such as climate change, Morocco continues to play a critical role in ensuring a resilient and secure Mediterranean region.
