Bata India profit jumps 23% as premium footwear and sneakers drive growth
Bata India posted a strong start to its new financial year, with first-quarter profit rising 23% as consumers showed sustained demand for higher-priced footwear and sneakers.
The Indian footwear retailer reported a profit of 639.8 million rupees ($6.70 million) for the quarter ended June 30, compared with 520 million rupees a year earlier.
Revenue from operations increased by around 4% to 9.79 billion rupees, highlighting continued sales growth despite an increasingly competitive retail environment.
Premium products lead performance
Bata India’s latest results were supported by its strategy of expanding its presence in higher-value footwear.
Premium shoes and sneakers were among the strongest contributors to growth, reflecting a broader shift in consumer preferences toward casual and lifestyle-oriented footwear.
The company’s "Sneaker Studio" retail format has benefited from this trend by focusing specifically on casual shoes, a segment that has become increasingly important for traditional footwear retailers.
Smaller cities become a key growth market
Bata is also continuing to expand its physical retail network beyond India’s largest metropolitan areas.
The company has been adding stores in smaller cities and towns, giving it access to consumers who are increasingly exposed to national and international footwear brands.
The expansion allows Bata to combine its established retail presence with growing demand in markets outside India’s major urban centres.
Competition intensifies
The positive quarterly performance comes as Bata faces increasingly intense competition in the Indian footwear market.
Large retail groups such as Reliance Retail have expanded their presence in the sector, while a growing number of digital-first footwear companies are competing for younger consumers through online channels.
That environment is putting pressure on established retailers to differentiate themselves through product innovation, pricing, store formats and brand positioning.
Bata’s focus on premium footwear and sneakers represents one response to those changing consumer dynamics.
A stronger quarter despite a challenging market
The combination of higher-margin products, sneaker demand and continued store expansion helped Bata deliver a significant improvement in profitability during the June quarter.
The results suggest that the company’s efforts to reposition parts of its portfolio toward premium and casual footwear are gaining traction.
The next challenge will be maintaining that momentum as competition intensifies and Indian consumers gain access to an increasingly diverse range of footwear brands across physical and online retail channels.
