Ukraine proposes new talks with Russia amid renewed attacks

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has proposed resuming peace negotiations with Russia next week, signaling a possible shift in the stagnant diplomatic efforts to end the conflict. This announcement comes just days after U.S. President Donald Trump agreed to resume American arms deliveries to Kyiv.

In his daily message to the nation, Zelensky confirmed that National Security Council Secretary Rustem Umerov had formally suggested a new round of talks with Russian representatives. “It is necessary to revive negotiations,” Zelensky emphasized, expressing his willingness once again to meet directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin. “A top-level meeting is essential to achieve real peace,” he added.

Stalemate in Istanbul Talks

Earlier rounds of discussions held in Istanbul, under strong encouragement from Washington, led only to limited agreements involving prisoner exchanges and the repatriation of soldiers’ remains. No substantial progress was made on a lasting ceasefire.

The last negotiations in June collapsed after Moscow reiterated its demands: recognition of Russian control over four occupied regions in addition to Crimea (annexed in 2014) and Ukraine’s renunciation of all Western military aid. Ukraine dismissed these terms as "ultimatums," questioning Russia’s true commitment to peace.

Despite the deadlock, the Kremlin stated this week it remains open to dialogue, particularly after Trump gave Moscow a 50-day deadline to reach a peace deal or face new sanctions. Simultaneously, he confirmed the renewal of NATO-financed weapons shipments to Ukraine.

The European Union also increased pressure on Russia, tightening sanctions by lowering the price cap on Russian oil exports to below $50 per barrel — a blow to one of the Kremlin’s key revenue streams.

Russian Strikes Continue

On the battlefield, Russia continues its aggressive campaign. Missile and drone attacks have intensified in recent weeks, targeting cities across Ukraine, including Kyiv.

On Saturday, three civilians were killed in fresh strikes. A missile hit the town of Vassylkivska in the Dnipropetrovsk region, killing at least two people, according to regional governor Serhiy Lysak. A medical center, a school, and a cultural institution were destroyed, and several homes were damaged.
