Netherlands prepares for its largest solar eclipse since 1999
The Netherlands is set to witness one of the most remarkable astronomical events in decades, with a major solar eclipse expected to occur on August 12, 2026. The phenomenon will be the largest solar eclipse visible from the country since 1999, attracting the attention of astronomy enthusiasts and the general public.
According to Dutch media reports, the eclipse will be visible as a partial solar eclipse across many regions of the world. In the Netherlands, however, the Moon is expected to cover nearly 90% of the Sun’s disk, creating an impressive visual spectacle.
The event is expected to last around two hours, beginning at approximately 7:16 p.m. local time. The eclipse will gradually develop as the Moon moves between the Earth and the Sun, reaching its peak about an hour after the beginning of the phenomenon.
A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes directly between the Earth and the Sun, blocking part of the sunlight and casting its shadow on the planet. During the event, temperatures may slightly decrease, shadows can appear unusual, and some animals may react to the sudden change in daylight.
While ancient civilizations often considered eclipses as mysterious signs or supernatural events, modern science explains them as natural cosmic alignments resulting from the movements of celestial bodies.
The August 2026 sky will offer several other astronomical highlights. Shortly after the eclipse, the Perseid meteor shower is expected to reach its peak, with observers potentially able to see around 100 meteors per hour under favorable conditions. The period will also feature the visibility of several planets, including Neptune, Saturn, Uranus, Mars, Mercury, and Jupiter. In addition, a partial lunar eclipse is expected on August 28, offering another opportunity for skywatchers in some parts of the world to observe a rare celestial event.
The combination of these phenomena is expected to make August 2026 an exceptional month for astronomy lovers and researchers following major events in the night sky.
