HSBC launches $1 billion share buyback after strong first-half profit growth
HSBC has announced a share buyback programme of up to $1 billion after reporting a sharp increase in first-half earnings, underscoring the British banking group's confidence in its financial position and long-term strategy.
The repurchase programme is expected to be completed before the publication of the bank's third-quarter financial results and comes alongside a higher interim dividend for shareholders.
Earnings strengthened by higher banking income
HSBC reported net profit of $14.6 billion for the first six months of the year, representing a 27% increase compared with the same period a year earlier.
The bank also posted pre-tax profit of $19.5 billion, up 23% year-on-year, reflecting continued growth across its core banking operations.
According to the group, the improved performance was driven primarily by stronger net interest income, as well as higher fee and commission revenues.
Shareholder returns remain a priority
Alongside the earnings release, HSBC confirmed a share buyback of up to $1 billion, reinforcing its commitment to returning excess capital to investors.
The board also approved a second interim dividend of $0.10 per share, providing an additional boost to shareholder distributions following the stronger financial performance.
The buyback programme is scheduled to conclude before the release of the bank's third-quarter results.
CEO highlights strategic progress
Chief Executive Georges Elhedery said the latest results demonstrate the effectiveness of HSBC's strategic transformation and operational discipline.
Management emphasized that the group continues to execute its long-term priorities while maintaining a strong capital position, allowing it to invest in growth opportunities and reward shareholders simultaneously.
The latest earnings reinforce HSBC's position among the world's leading international banks as it continues to benefit from resilient banking income and diversified global operations.
