Italy records a historic decline in migrant arrivals
Italy has recorded a significant decline in the number of irregular migrants arriving by sea since the beginning of the year, according to figures released by the Italian Interior Ministry. The number of arrivals has dropped by around 55% compared with the same period last year, marking one of the sharpest decreases in recent years.
Italian authorities have attributed this decline to the migration policies adopted by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government, which has focused on strengthening border controls, increasing cooperation with transit countries, and tightening measures against illegal migration networks.
According to the Interior Ministry, the reduction is even more significant when compared with 2023, with arrivals down by nearly 82%. That year, the current government took office amid a major increase in migrant crossings, which officials described as a situation requiring urgent intervention.
The figures were released amid growing debate between Rome and Madrid over migration management following the recent events in the Spanish city of Ceuta, where authorities faced a large influx of migrants attempting to enter the territory from Morocco.
The Italian government also responded to criticism from Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares, who referred to previous migration pressures affecting the Italian island of Lampedusa. Italian officials rejected the comparison, stating that the island is currently experiencing a stable situation, with only a limited number of migrants present and no ongoing emergency.
Rome considers the latest data as evidence that its strategy is producing results, while European countries continue to debate the best approach to managing migration flows across the Mediterranean.
The issue remains a major challenge for the European Union, where member states are seeking a balance between border security, humanitarian responsibilities, and cooperation with neighboring countries.
