Russia introduces new legal framework for cryptocurrency trading
Russia has taken a major step toward regulating the digital asset sector after President Vladimir Putin signed legislation establishing a legal framework for cryptocurrency trading. The new law officially recognizes cryptocurrencies as a form of property and introduces comprehensive rules governing their use, ownership, and exchange within the country.
Under the legislation, Russian citizens will be able to invest in cryptocurrencies through authorized domestic trading platforms and licensed financial intermediaries. The legal framework also provides judicial protection for cryptocurrency-related property rights, offering greater legal certainty for investors and businesses operating in the digital asset market.
The Central Bank of Russia will oversee the regulation and supervision of the cryptocurrency sector, while the government will have the authority to coordinate with relevant state institutions to ensure that digital asset activities comply with national economic, financial, and security interests.
The law is scheduled to enter into force on September 1, 2026. A transitional period will allow certain digital exchange operators to continue their activities before obtaining full regulatory authorization. Additional consumer protection measures will later require digital asset service providers to verify transaction details and implement safeguards against unauthorized cryptocurrency transfers.
The move reflects Russia's broader efforts to establish a regulated digital economy while encouraging technological innovation. As governments around the world continue to develop policies for cryptocurrencies, the Russian framework aims to balance market development with financial stability, investor protection, and regulatory oversight.
