Ethiopia landslide at monastery kills 14 pilgrims during heavy rains

At least 14 pilgrims have died and five others were injured after a landslide struck an Orthodox monastery in Ethiopia's Amhara region, highlighting the growing risks posed by the country's seasonal torrential rains.

The deadly incident occurred at the Tsadkane Mariam Monastery in Sela Dingay, approximately 200 kilometers northeast of Addis Ababa, where worshippers had gathered for prayers when a rain-triggered mudslide swept through part of the religious complex.

Heavy overnight rainfall triggered the disaster

According to local church authorities, the landslide occurred early Monday morning after intense overnight rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning.

The mass of mud, rocks and debris cascaded down a nearby hillside, burying sections of the monastery where pilgrims had been praying. Fourteen people died at the scene, while several others sustained injuries. Three of the injured were reported to be in critical condition and were transferred to hospital.

Church officials later confirmed that the death toll was final.

Rainy season raises disaster risks

Ethiopia is currently in its principal rainy season, which typically extends from June to September across much of the country. During this period, prolonged rainfall frequently increases the risk of landslides and flash floods, particularly in mountainous and rural areas.

The country, home to around 130 million people, has experienced repeated weather-related disasters in recent years, with vulnerable communities often facing significant challenges due to difficult terrain and limited infrastructure.

Authorities monitor weather-related threats

The tragedy underscores the need for continued monitoring of areas vulnerable to landslides during periods of intense rainfall.

Emergency response efforts have focused on assisting the injured and assessing conditions around the monastery, while local authorities and church officials continue to evaluate the impact of the disaster on the surrounding community.
