Historic Danube drought raises concerns over Europe's energy supply
Several countries in Central and Eastern Europe are facing growing energy concerns as exceptionally low water levels in the Danube River disrupt electricity production and transportation. The prolonged drought, combined with persistent heatwaves, has placed additional pressure on energy infrastructure that depends on the river for cooling and hydropower generation.
Romania has taken emergency measures to maintain operations at its Cernavodă Nuclear Power Plant, which supplies a significant share of the country's electricity. Authorities carried out engineering operations to improve water flow toward the plant's cooling system after declining river levels threatened normal operations. Officials continue to monitor the situation while implementing additional measures to safeguard energy production.
Hungary is also experiencing difficulties at its Paks Nuclear Power Plant, where reduced river levels have affected cooling capacity. The government has urged households and businesses to reduce electricity consumption during peak hours while introducing energy-saving measures across public facilities and transportation systems to ease pressure on the national grid.
Elsewhere in the region, lower water levels have reduced hydropower generation and affected river navigation. Authorities in several countries have advised residents to conserve both water and electricity as the prolonged dry conditions continue.
Climate experts say the Danube Basin has experienced one of its driest periods in decades, with below-average rainfall since winter and repeated heatwaves pushing temperatures above seasonal norms. Scientists warn that climate change is increasing the frequency and intensity of droughts across Europe, making rivers more vulnerable to prolonged periods of low flow.
Beyond the energy sector, the drought has disrupted commercial shipping along one of Europe's most important inland waterways. Cargo vessels have been forced to reduce their loads, while navigation has become increasingly difficult in several sections of the river because of shallow water.
Energy analysts note that the situation highlights the growing vulnerability of critical infrastructure to extreme weather events. As Europe continues its transition toward cleaner energy systems, experts stress the importance of strengthening climate resilience, improving water resource management, and diversifying electricity sources to reduce dependence on weather-sensitive infrastructure.
With forecasts suggesting that dry conditions may persist, governments across the region remain on alert, closely monitoring river levels and preparing additional measures to ensure energy security and protect essential services.
