Guatemala raises nationwide danger alert as Fuego volcano eruption intensifies

Guatemalan authorities have declared a nationwide orange "danger" alert following a significant eruption of the Fuego volcano, prompting evacuations, school closures and transport disruptions as volcanic activity intensified near the country's capital.

The alert, announced by the National Coordination for Disaster Reduction (Conred), reflects growing concerns over the eruption, which has sent lava flows, volcanic gases and massive ash plumes into the atmosphere.

Evacuations begin as volcanic activity increases

Emergency authorities began evacuating residents from two communities located near the volcano after monitoring a sharp increase in eruptive activity.

Fuego, situated about 35 kilometres southwest of Guatemala City, entered a new eruptive phase on Monday morning, with the intensity of the eruption continuing to rise overnight.

Officials warned that the volcano's activity poses significant risks to nearby populations, particularly due to falling ash, volcanic gases and the potential for additional hazardous events associated with the eruption.

Schools closed and major road shut down

In response to the escalating situation, the Guatemalan government suspended classes in schools located within affected areas and closed a key highway linking southern Guatemala with the historic city of Antigua, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The precautionary measures are intended to reduce public exposure to volcanic hazards while allowing emergency services to operate safely.

Authorities continue to monitor the volcano closely and have urged residents to follow official instructions as conditions evolve.

Central America's most active volcano

Rising to an elevation of 3,763 metres, Volcán de Fuego is widely regarded as the most active volcano in Central America.

Its frequent eruptions have repeatedly forced large-scale evacuations in recent years, making continuous monitoring and emergency preparedness a central component of Guatemala's disaster management strategy.

With volcanic activity still ongoing, authorities remain on high alert as they assess the potential for further escalation and additional protective measures.
